Healing through Bloodletting

When you get sick you go to the doctor. If it is determined that you have an infection, the doctor gives you an antibiotic to get rid of said infection. When a woman is having her menstrual cycle she wears maxi pads or tampons to contain the blood. You may be wondering why I am telling you things that you already know but I do indeed have a point.
My point is that strangely enough, the treatment for infection, illness and a woman’s menstrual cycle was bloodletting. Bloodletting was a system that required one’s blood to be withdrawn in order to cure various ailments.

Bloodletting technique -practiced since ancient time
The ancients believed that a person’s blood was what kept the bodies balance in a healthy state so if they were sick letting out some of the blood would cure them. There was a whole system for bloodletting that showed the points of the body where the blood should be withdrawn. If you think this sounds barbaric and ignorant then you are not alone.
However, this “medical” practice was used by Mesopotamians, Greeks, Aztecs, Mayans and Egyptians. Since the people in this era was unlearned about medical things to this degree, it was no surprise that there were many instances where the patient was bleed to death as the practitioner did not know how much bloodletting was too much bloodletting. In fact, in Ayurveda (ancient Indian medicine system) the bloodletting has been considered as one of the five body purification therapies (the panchakarma).
An interesting fact that many Americans do not know about, deals with bloodletting and our first president, George Washington. During a bought with some type of throat infection, Washington was treated with the best know medical procedure of the time; bloodletting. Less than 24 hours after his symptoms began, Washington was dead. His death was attributed to the infection being so bad that bleeding him would not work. However, writers associated Mouls Inc. researched and found that there has been some serious speculation surrounding his actual cause of death. Some historians insist that too much blood was taken out of the president’s body. Some claim that the blood letter took nearly 9 pints from Washington and the average person only has between 10 and 12 pints of blood.
Death by draining sounds more plausible to me than death from a URI. As for the benefits of bloodletting for a menstruating woman, this was done to make the cycle shorter, or so people thought.
When a woman was having her monthly cycle, they would make a slash in their leg or ankle in order to drain blood from that area as well. Why? Because it was thought that if the bleeding was coming from these other areas than the blood from their menstrual cycle would slow down and stop faster.
It is also a fact that the people of that time got the idea of bloodletting for health purposes from the woman’s menstrual cycle. It was thought that when a woman had her monthly that it was her body’s way of detoxing itself. So, if it worked so well for the health of the woman’s body, it must be something that would detox and cure men and children as well.
Now that you know this history, you should thank your lucky stars that we live in a time where we all know better!
